Yes. Through the non-profit LearnToBe, IXL, and Zoom, virtual tutoring is able to stay free for all. You will never put in any payment information.
Established in late February 2023, The EmpowerEd Tutoring Program started as a high school chapter in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. There were originally only members from The Benjamin School, until it incorporated students from The Pinecrest School nearby. It was co-founded by ‘25 Darrow Becker and ‘26 Chase Zur, with the clear intentions to ensure educational equity. There were never thoughts of having any physical school club as the goal was always to expand beyond the Palm Beach area. The program now includes high-schoolers, college students, and retired teachers from across the nation.
After accepting a student, tutors usually contact the student with a brief introduction then establish a good first session time. If students would like help with their homework, tutors simply start the session through the dashboard with the average session lasting around an hour. After the session, the tutor fills out a short survey by reporting session duration and providing a one-sentence summary of what happened. Tutors usually have sessions once per week, but have full control over their schedule and availability.
Once accepted by a tutor, students are able to contact their tutor at any point through a linked messaging service on their student dashboard. As well, they can ask to schedule sessions and coordinate with their tutor whenever needed. If they come across a problem with their work during the school week, they can bring that work to their scheduled session and have their tutor help them through it.
